Show Spoiler

646f9e108c In the year 1999, an alien battle fortress crash lands on an island in the South Pacific. Over the next ten years, mankind repairs and refits this fortress, using the advanced "robotechnology" found aboard her to create fighter planes that can transform into giant robots. As soonthe repaired fortress is ready for launch, the aliens to whom she belongs finally discover its location. Thus begins a series of wars that will devastate the planet Earth. This television series was created by Carl Macek from three Japanese television series, Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Super Dimensional Cavalry Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeada.
Robotech is three Japanese Animation titles (Macross, Army of the Southern Cross and Mospeda) that were put together and dubbed into English. The plot follow three generations of humans. A "war movie", Robotech starts with an alien starship landing on Earth. Humans rebuild the ship and learn parts of its technology. When a race of giants comes looking for the ship, the humans defeat them by using human emotions and music to off balance them. The Second Generation is about their children, while the parents have gone to find the homeworld of the giant soldiers' makers, the Robotech Masters. However, the Masters have come to Earth and the Southern Cross must fight them off. The Third Generation is about the spacegoing humans coming back home to find out Earth has been taken over by yet another alien species. Throughout the series a mysterious power source, Protoculture, and its technological use, called Robotechnology, is paramount. A "serious" animated series, Robotech deals with the causes and consequences of war on people.
I have been always intrigued by the saga of Robotech evena kid back in the mid-1980's when this first came on American TV. The characters are well-rounded, you cared about what happens to them, and it had this "soap opera" element which gave them personalitypeople caught up in a devastating war not just one-sided military folk. This is an intriguing anthology, one of the best in animation history.

However, the dialog is the most laughable and calling it "cheesy" is an understatement! First of all it way to melodramatic for today's audiences, who are used to humor and sarcasm. "What human beings would actually talk like this?" "Even if they don't practice profanity, who would talk like this?" The other thing that I need to get off of my chest, is the series of huge plot holes. For example: the final installment of the Macross Saga. As the SDF-1 bites the dust, where the hell were Breetai and Exedore? Couldn't they help their new comrades? Not only that: the final scene showed Lisa and Rickthe only people in the world to rebuild the RDF forces. Come on, here? You could've put some more information into this, you know. Show some rescue operation to put some clarity and some meat in this send off the first generation of Robotech defenders! But no, they have to put plot holes the size of…well a Battlefortress. Did you know that when Commander Leonard spoke of the deceased, he didn't mention Vanessa's name in the Eulogy in the Master's Saga? If this were a true saga, you would've answered the previous question and Admiral Gloval's successor and UEG leadership.

The second saga, explained a lot about the purpose of the SDF-1the Protoculture factory. My major complaint was the mecha and design. The vehicles and uniforms were poorly designed and hideous at best. More thought could've been used in the development process. It wasn'tinvolving and detail orientedthe first and third installment. Still, it would've been better if you do a follow up of the Pioneer mission of the SDF-3. Overall, despite the cheesy linguistics, the PG feel to it, Robotech is still one of the greatest anime sagas on the market.
Once upon a time Harmony-Gold purchased three separate Japanese anime sci-fi series, Macross, Southern Cross and Genesis Climber Mospeda, and all three were too short to be aired individually to fill out the 65+ episode list that was required to fill out a syndication contract back in the 1980s. Since the three shows had very similar looking tech the late Carl Macek and his colleagues decided to re-dub and re-write the three unrelated shows into one on-going story where each show would represent three different generations of humanity's struggle to defend itself from alien invaders in pursuit of the elusive energy source knownProto-Culture in a three season span.

The first chapter, "The Macross Saga", mixes the visuals of Star Wars with the political intrigues of Star Trekit chronicles the exploits of the crew of the SDF-1, and their war with the Zentradie, the first in a wave of aliens who have come to Earth for Proto-Culture. Among the human dramas that play out against this space operatic war is Rick Hunter, a hot blooded young pilot, being caught in a love triangle between the flighty pop star Lynn Minmei and his (not that much) older superior officer Lisa Hayes.

The second chapter, "The Masters", focuses on Earth about 20 years after the events of "Macross Saga", with Dana Sterling, the bubbly half-human/half-Zentradie daughter of Max Sterling & Miriya Parina, leading the 15th Squadronthey try to defend Earth from the Robotech Masters, the forerunners to the Zentradie, who seek to secure the Proto-Culture for themselves before the arrival of their ancient enemies the Invid. Various characters look for love in all the wrong places, with Bowie Grant falling hard for the alien Musica.

The third & final chapter, "The New Generation", focuses on the heroic Scott Bernardhe leads a ragtag group of misfits against the aforementioned Invid to reclaim Earth once and for all. Scott struggles to overcome the grief of losing his fiancé Marlene Rush while also contending with his feelings for the amnesiac Ariel; smart ass survivalist Rand butts heads with the rough and tumble Rook while little Annie dreams of finding Mr. Right. The big guy Lunk is doing all he can not to fall apart under pressure while the wholesome cross-dressing singer Lancer finds himself falling for the Invid Princess Sera.

Each series/season has its strengths and weaknesses, and while this "cut & paste" approach may look a little crude to a modern audience (especially on repeat viewings) it works surprisingly well even after all these years. "Macross Saga" and "New Generation" feature better paced, more epic plots and more engaging characters than "The Masters", while "Masters" arguably has the best animation of the three series. It's not even that the cast of "Masters" are unlikable so muchthey just don't getmuch character developmentthe casts of the first and third halves and they are also hindered by having a slower less interesting plot, which sadly led to Masters being treated"the middle child" of the series - not helped by the awkward time skip from Macross either. They're choice of character to be Dana Sterling was also… questionable given another more likely candidate.

Beyond that, Rick Hunter may be the main character of Macross Saga but he is arguably the least likable character there & possibly the least likable of the three leads from each series. Despite getting all the hero's journey tropes (the call, the mentor, etc.) Rick's immaturity makes him painfully unsympathetic at certain junctures, especially in regards to his poor behavior towards his intended love interest LisaMacross Saga nears the end; you'll probably spend most of MS being more interested in characters like Roy Fokker and Max Sterling (who's own romance with Miriya is sadly underused) than Rick, and you'll probably be left scratching your head wondering why Lisa would settle for Rick other than he's the main character.

The voice acting can be hammy at times & the dialogue often overwritten, but that lends a certain charm to it. Despite the detriments listed above there is still a lot to love in the series, from the late Ulpio Minucci's music to the grim & ugly depictions of war, suffering & the struggle to hold on to one's humanity in the face of tragedy, all of which elevates it above my personal criticismswellother series of that time period.
